Chapter Eight

For Darius, the past few days had been a blur of happiness and contentment, starting from the moment he and Kai truly acknowledged their mating. True, it wasn’t always smooth sailing, and Darius acknowledged that. He and Kai were both different people fundamentally, and although Darius was beginning to understand very clearly how his mate worked, even with the gift of being able to read each other’s thoughts and emotions, Kai was still a bit of a mystery to him that he was beginning to learn more and more about every day.

There was the fact that he had to be more open about who he was, and where he came from, and how he’d met Micah and Jayce, and where the madman named Desmond Wallace fit in. Having someone care about his well-being in the way Kai was, with the unusual amount of motherly doting he’d never been accustomed to, was both refreshing and daunting. In some ways, Darius understood that it was just something he needed to get used to, because Kai was always going to be the caretaking sort, and he was going to be the recipient of the brunt of it, when he had been used to only taking care of himself for most of his immortal life.

There was also the fact that Kai was ill-prepared for any sort of sexual encounter. Being the ever-protective and ever-ready boyfriend, however, Darius had to rectify that immediately, especially when he realized the lube he’d been using hadn’t actually been lube meant for sexual play, but rather, baby oil. And while it did provide a slick sensation they both needed, he knew that was bound to be bad for his partner. So they stocked up for the many, many, many sexual encounters they had, and were going to have.

One thing he was curious about his mate, however, was why Kai was so adamant about being possessive, even when he had been perfectly clear that this was a mating, and to demons, mating was a special, once-in-a-lifetime thing. In fact, he expected that he’d have to be the one fighting off people with a stick where it came to Kai, but it seemed that Darius had calculated that wrong. Whenever the two of them set foot outside, time and time again, Kai would have to insert himself into the conversation of people who were too hopeful about getting into Darius’s pants, and the attention was disconcerting as well as unwarranted. Kai was, understandably, threatened by the entire thing, and sometimes, his feelings became a little too much.

It stymied him a little why his little human lover wouldn’t just let him be the polite one and turn people away. During their many nighttime conversations, as Darius began to live with Kai to try and cement their bond even further, their conversations did stray towards Kai being so upfront about being in a relationship with Darius.
